Why are you not millionaires?

A thread I have found intriguing on NLP Connections that prompted the following rambling from me…  In a nutshell the person is asking if you are all so good at NLP then why aren’t you all millionaires… Valid question but from who’s model of the world does he speak?

Please note I have altered the identity of the person and any resemblance to anyone you may think it could possibly be is purely a mind read… Enjoy…

I know someone who at 29yrs old was sooooo broke to the extent where he went to the shop one day and asked if he could have 10 lambert and butler ciggies on the strap (they were £1.10p at the time). Every intention of paying later that day and expecting the fags to be handed over without consideration, he was wrong… he was refused… It changed his life…

He walked out the shop and thought to himself “that will never happen to me again”… Within 4 years he had created a computer business and a property development business and had his first £1,000.000 in the bank. Things were plain sailing from there and everything he seemed to touch turned to gold (he could do nothing wrong) and the £££££’s just kept rolling in… At one time he looked and had assets worth over 6 million, people in place doing his work for him, delegating became second nature whilst leaving himself to live the lifestyle he thought being a millionaire was all about…

1st class everywhere, Only the finest wines (no more white cider), 5* Hotels and limousine travel… Oh and no more thought or precision to any business deals anymore, It was all too easy. Actually it was all getting a bit out of hand especially when deep down something seemed to be missing.

Then after watching some TV and sensing the feelings of intrigue and excitement came a new love in his life… No Limit Holdem Poker. A new found obsessive type zest and a new way of living on the edge, initially playing ‘virtual’ free money games; culminating onto playing high stakes cash and pitting his wits against some of the best in the field… Eventually he was on TV playing for high stakes and then onto the Bellagio to play in the world series of poker for a $30,000,000 prizepool… People were in awe of him and at the lifestyle he possessed, it all seemed so easy…

But deep down in the abyss of his unconscious he was ‘lost’, had no sense of purpose and couldn’t understand what was going on or why. He realised poker (although he was passionate about it) was just filling the gaps of what seemed to be an empty void. Whilst in the process getting fat and unhealthy and lazy. He also realised that the people that were working for him (his trusted steeds) didn’t care about his business or the people he did business with like he ‘had’. As a result his business took a huge hit and suffered great losses…

He thought to himself one night after another angry outburst, “how can I manage my own state more effectively?” and as he said it to himself he looked up at his bookshelf and saw a book called ‘The NLP Workbook’… He read the first two pages, jumped on the internet and booked on a Practitioner course…

The rest is history…

He said that he realised that after the ‘ciggie’ incident where he decided it wasn’t going to happen again that he’d had a vision that day a representation of himself and had actualised it in the space of a few years. After learning NLP it allowed him to backtrack through his past experiences and realise that all he needed to do was go beyond his previous dreams. Stay mindfull of what he really wants to achieve and how he plans on doing it…

Poker taught him about life, and probability, and variance… When someone is holding cards you can only make a best guess at what’s out there, you can never be 100% certain (ever)… Variance comes in waves and you have to sometimes weather the storm. They say a smooth sea never made a skilled mariner…

Money can’t buy you any of the above, although it did give him the opportunity to seek some of the best trainers out there. More experiences on offer in the playground of life. Witnessing the greedy and the Egotistical was fascinating learning and not always revealing themselves at first because hindsight is a great teacher. Then witnessing the absolutist thinking of certain schools and the near religious type dogma that existed. Reminded him of when he was the over cocky businessman that thought he had life sewn up and that his way was the only way… Doodling in business meetings, ignoring the details, dismissing the doom and gloom merchants because they were boring, and missing golden opportunities to grow even further…

Mind you he says it’s the best experience he’s ever had, It taught him more about people and about himself and about the paradoxes of success & failiure…

Moreover, he tends to Agree with John Grinder on success being extremely boring sometimes. Actually it wasn’t until he started looking at the ‘pitfalls’ and realising that they were one of the biggest resources he owned that the true aha moments emerged. He just had to be brave enough to brush his ego aside and accomodate them as part of being human. His mis-takes could be learned from…

I communicate with him constantly and he knows he’s one of the wealthiest people I am proud to be associated with… (Wealth as in ‘Richness in experience’)… He likes to think he Spends his knowledge like a millionaire intent on going broke whilst constantly learning and applying and developing… He always ‘wants to know more’…

He can tell you from experience that being a millionaire is sometimes not all it’s cracked up to be…

He also says that if he can do it… Anyone can… And I believe him…

Finding the failiure in success from time to time can take a while… Finding the success in failiure is where you get the opportunity to embrace THE PITFALLS…

Sensory Acuity & Lollipop Ladies (Part One)

Are you a lollipop lady or a traffic warden?

Mmm Where do I start is the question?

I guess firstly it’s back to basics because this is an area that totally fascinates and intrigues me so much that I have to admit to being a sensory Acuity Junkie. And it’s not just for the Daniel Negreanus and Texas Dolly’s of the poker world…  More on that shortly…

The ability to read people is an art form for sure but it’s something you are all highly capable of.  After all you’ve been doing it since the day you entered the world and most probably even before (without even knowing it).  Now, obviously no matter how long you’ve been playing poker I’m sure you didn’t enter the world with a pack of playing cards or slansky’s theory of Poker in your hands (unless you were born in Vegas).

So what is sensory acuity?

One way of thinking about it is our awareness of internal/external stimuli and what we tune into on a daily basis via our (basic) 5 x senses (Visual,Auditory,Kinesthetic,Olfactory,Gustatory) that’s the technical term for Seeing, hearing, feeling, smelling, and tasting.

These are described in NLP as representational systems.  Representation Systems

The way we take in information can influence our perceptions of the world whilst guiding us to make decisions, judgements and form assumptions based on the sensory input coming in via our five senses, our VAKOG.

So how can that be useful?

Well to navigate through the world we need to have an awareness of our surroundings so that we can anticipate the myriad of possible occurrences in day to day life.  There are contexts where sensory acuity is paramount and not quite so but while ever you have a pulse it’s never completely switched off.

The need to be aware of our surroundings is I’m sure you’ll agree very important.  I was thinking traffic wardens when I wrote that but let’s not go there as I don’t believe they have any senses whatsoever, so there are always exceptions I suppose.  What about the old lollipop Lady?  I mean all they do is a mundane job and help people cross the road right?  Well you could say yes on one level if that’s how you perceive them.  However, consider that on the other hand they have to be highly skilled and tuned to the outside world as they have a responsibility to help our children cross the roads.

If you ever watch them sometimes when there’s no traffic about it may seem like they haven’t got a care in the world or wonder how they pacify themselves.  However, when the children come along or something triggers their attention they have to ensure not only the childrens safety but their own.  Now if they were in their own head thinking about what they are going to have for tea or how the England goalie messed up and allowed in a goal they could be described as ‘internal’ or ‘in their own heads’, or in the case of traffic wardens ‘In their own little world’.  The lollipop lady has to switch on to what’s going on and ‘calibrate‘ or ‘measure‘ what needs to be done in the moment to ensure a smooth transition from one side of the road to the other.  Once mission is accomplished they can ‘go back inside’ or stay outside and marvel at what they and you do naturally when required or at will.

Now, this is where I like to use the word ‘Intention‘ and by setting your intention you can direct your ‘attention‘ to what it is you want to achieve.  In doing so you can then let go of the outcome and allow your mind/body system do the work for you.  So before we get to the felt why not try the following experiment.

Think about something that you don’t really care for doing that from time to time you’ve had those feelings of discomfort like boredom or you can hear yourself internally rabbiting on about how boring etc.  It might be in a waiting room, a traffic jam or a queue at you local supermarket.  It could be at the poker table when you’ve just been outdrawn by the table maniac who needed runner runner to win and hit it and you’re frustrating yourself.

Where was you?  Inside or outside? How did it affect you? And how long was you there for as you think about it now?

Simple questions but if you back-track through your experience you’ll find that you can spend a lot of time inside your own head mulling over the mundane and you might say justifiably so.  How about having the ability to switch your attention elsewhere?

Well that’s the easy part because you’ve been doing it all your life and just did it again in the above exercise.

You see, boredom for example is just a state of mind and if you focus your attention on being bored.  Guess what…

Consider that next time you find yourself in one of the above situations or feel free to create your own ideas based on what’s written.

What is it that you can do differently that will allow you to switch your attention elsewhere?

And…

How many different ways can you start to think of that now?

How can you bring yourself ‘outside‘? Make it your ‘intention to do so the next time you find yourself ‘inside’.

My intention is to guide you through a very short focusing/de-focusing drill…

*

Focus your attention on the star above and as you continue reading notice how your attention drifts away from it and although you can still see it your not actually really focused on it are you?

Now focus on it again but the next time finish reading the instructions then stay put with your attention fixed on the star.  Only when you have really really focused on it allow yourself to start widening your vision and notice other things in your surroundings whilst still holding the star in your visual field.

What could you see ‘outside’ that you wasn’t noticing previously when focusing?

What sounds could you hear ‘outside’ that you wasn’t noticing previously?

And that’s it…

Other than it’s time to practice and take it out into the world to experience what it is I’m talking about.  Although to some extents you just have, haven’t you?  And you’ve been doing it all your life, aren’t you already realising this now?

Now the question is do the top players operate from ‘inside their heads’ wondering about the bad beat they got a few days ago or are they there on the table, in the moment, calibrating/measuring and weighing up the situation as the game pans out…?

Are they focusing all their attention on a star or do they widen your vision so that you can see and hear what’s going on around you?

You see in that sense their a bit like lollipop ladies guiding people to cross the road…

So as you think about it now how many lollipop ladies do you recognise you’ve played against in the past?

And how many were traffic wardens…

(Disclaimer) I have nothing against Traffic Wardens…

So… Are you a lollipop lady or a traffic warden… ?

Take care and see you at the tables…

Walking your talk…

Commitment – Cuts both ways

On the recent Provocative Hypnosis training a lot of ground was covered around obtaining ‘client commitment’ throughout the period of the 4 x days.  However, commitment from the client is of no use if you are not to do the same as you ask (walk your talk).

This following video Joergen speaks about ‘sealing the deal’ commitment wise and re-enforcing the frames already set to give both the trainer and the client the best possible opportunity to create change.

Shortly I will be posting details of the next Provocative Hypnosis training in Central London.

Stay well and I hope you enjoyed the video.  As always your comments are appreciated.

‘Welcome My Friend’

Utilising involuntary unconscious signals

I Posted something similar to this on the Provocative Hypnosis post training group that runs for 6 x weeks afterwards for integration of learnings demonstration follow-ups etc.  I wrote this up for my blog to share here as an example of some of the stuff that goes on behind closed doors, and hopefully some input from you…

Well I have to report something of a major breakthrough in learning for me that occurred yesterday and in the light of this group and your continuing learning I thought I’d share.

The Provocative Hypnosis training first of all shook my worldview of change-work and made me take a closer look at multiple aspects of myself and some of my BIG assumptions that I’m experimenting with in the world on a daily basis.  I was thinking about some of the tough decisions I’ve been facing in business and some of the possibilities of further ones down the line in a variety of different ways.  One area of my business is property development, re-furbishing and rental.  Due to the dips in the economy land has decreased in value and some of the bigger plots I co-own have dropped significantly, some by over 50% in value.  To say that I was flying and everything I touched was turning to gold was an understatement.  I couldn’t really put a foot wrong in business and continued working and building up the different aspects of the company.

Then… kaboooom, the ripples and warning signs in the economy turned into waves that suddenly became tidal and I’ve really fought hard to save my property business from the banks who have an interest (a very selfish one) and people wanting to give me a right kick in the proverbial kerry packers.  You may have heard the saying, “‘When the fox hears the rabbit screamin, he comes a runnin, but not to help… Well So far so the fox is still a runnin and the twists and turns are definately where character and inside insights are developed.  As John grinder said to me one day “Success can get boring, it’s the mis-takes that you get the most from”.  So some struggle and some strife and more prominently though and the intention of my writing, is this sensation that I was getting from time to time that I could only label as ‘Lost’ which was constantly emerging, tugging like a child that wants attention and when it doesn’t get it the tug becomes more of a pull.

Sometimes in situations like this you may not feel you have anyone to talk to or because you are looking through certain lenses/filters of thinking rather than switching lenses so you can look at the thoughts!  just how it may be affecting you personally.  In this instance I certainly didn’t want to burden anyone else or strike fear into family members about the thoughts I was having so I decided to keep things to myself and ‘act as if’ I knew where I was going, when I actually felt I didn’t, hence the ever expanding sensation of being ‘lost’.  It was starting to affect my life in other ways as I think of it now especially in the health arena as covertly I changed over a period of time and seemed to be on a kind of (fat finding) mission, you know eating on the run, drinking more than normal, a nice steady transition from doing 15 mile training runs and Core training etc to absolutely zero.  Whilst maintaining focus purely on ‘busy being busy’ and constantly resisting the thoughts and feelings of having to walk round with a blindfold whilst fumbling around for answers that weren’t too keen on making themselves known.

Now, here’s the thing, I wasn’t focusing purely on business I was focusing on what I didn’t know about… The future and a zillion different ways it could pan out and from time to time it didn’t look quite what I’d like it to turn out.  Now I’m going to repeat something (from time to time) which means not constant but every now and then.  But If I totted the amount of time spent in this particular state and spread it through time it would probably accumulate to plenty of man hours running around with a pin and a tail but no donkey in sight.

When Jorgen was here delivering the Provocative Hypnosis training I asked him one night about a technique he had demonstrated, “have you used this technique for self application”? to which he replied “no I have other things for that but if you’re curious maybe you could test it in experience”.  As I heard him say it I also heard myself saying “the four days were really one big self application training.  I mean I felt like I was taken apart and when I tried to put myself back together as previously, the pieces didn’t fit any more”…  Especially a few weeks on as I now walk through the world on the lookout for my own assumptions, role projections and left brain robots to name but a few things so I can experiment like a mad scientist.  Michael Breen says everyone should develop their own mad scientists laugh so insert a Yorkshire Mad Scientist Muhahhhhhhhh here.

Last night I wrote a journal… One of the things Jorgen encourages participants of his training’s to do and I get urges to write so its an easy exercise for me.  It’s an area I’d like to focus more on professionally but the piece I wrote was just an expression which I sent to my business partner/best friend with a garble of my inner-most thoughts.  At the end of the message I wrote ‘This e-mail will be deleted by me once it has been sent and removed from my deleted folder.  You can read it and bin it or even print it and eat it I don’t mind’,

Later on that night the ‘Lost’ feeling came back and I said ‘welcome my friend’ which was taken from the training and an example is on a video clip on my site about unconscious signal utilisation.  I stayed totally present with it as I was laid in bed and then decided to have a play… (with my imagination) thank you, before your imagination starts to wander.  I thought to myself what would happen if I did a modified version of the hand drop technique? so firstly I imagined Jorgens voice counting me down from five to 1 and I really engaged with the auditory aspects whilst reciting the words verbatim and surprising myself in the process.   “that feeling you’ve been avoiding, you’ve tried all-sorts of things to distract yourself but now it’s time (insert rest of induction here)… I continued “use that feeling as an affect bridge back in time to the very first event (insert rest of script)…

“Now I’m going to count from 5 to one and at the count of 1 you’ll be right there (continue script)… When I reached the number one at first it was a little hazy and I knew I was somewhere but wasn’t really sure (probably bloody lost again) but as I asked myself questions like inside or outside? Alone or with people the memory started to take form.  All of a sudden I was at an event I can remember from my personal history but would never in a million years considered it could possibly have any impact.

So there I was back in time by 36 years to a four year old on holiday with my mum and dad somewhere in Devon and was out playing on my own in my own little world.  It was so clear in my mind whilst playing I was totally in the flow as If I was really there… Eventually where I decided to go back to mum and dad and our chalet but couldn’t find the one that was meant to be ours, I searched and it eventually dawned on me… I was LOST… Panic set in as I frantically screamed for my mum and dad to come and get me looking round anxiously for someone, anyone to save me from my despair… No help came from the outside and searching to no avail for what seemed lifetime.  Being enveloped like that by the sheer terror of losing my mum and dad was a nightmare that didn’t seem like it was going to end.  Then suddenly my mum popped her head out a chalet door about 20-yards away and said “what’s up son”.  (Insert pattern interrupt here) Now openeth the floodgates of tears as I ran at her like a child possessed grabbing hold of her leg like I wasn’t ever going to let go.  I got all the hugs and kisses you can imagine along with some “silly boy we knew you were there all the time we were watching you playing”…  I remember as I look back I really did take some consoling, you know like Gazza when England got knocked out of the world style crying mixed with intermittent gasps for air that sound like amplified hiccups.

I continued in the memory and asked myself or Jorgen asked me or whoever it was asking in my mind… what is it you can learn from this so that you can let go of the emotion? Those kind of questions… And then all the stuff came rushing back from the training about being a 40yr old person with different cognition and meaning making systems came out… I really was immersed in this and it wasn’t like I was putting any conscious effort into the process.

The thought appeared that I just wasn’t looking in the right place… Sometimes you have to step back and take a different vantage point… Gather your thoughts and find where it is you need to be…  Take some mental notes and go back to them if required…  You know, place a marker mentally on where you would like to be but don’t forget where you’ve been or where you came from… Basically a flood of thoughts, learnings and complete acceptance of the situation for what it was… Followed by the feeling completely dispersing like the big guy on Green Mile when he opens his mouth and all those flies start filling the atmosphere…

I literally dropped straight to sleep and woke up amazed at what had happened and amazed that I had the ability to work on myself in such a profound way without it seems much conscious input other than the frames I put in before hand.  I feel like there’s some more exploring to do and look forwards to sharing my thoughts along the way…  Seems like just a distant dream.

My entire journey in NLP/Hypnosis and Provocative Hypnosis has been the fascination with self application so that I can constantly develop personally in order to apply the techniques more effectively with others… Anyone else had any similar experiences?

What are some of the ways you have found work best when it seems as if your backs up against the wall?

What you resist persists so always remember when something appears that instead of pushing it away you give a simple greeting like ‘Welcome my friend’ because it may just be holding a message for you to ‘Find what it is you already have in times of challenge… Even the ones that seem extreme at the time’.

£100 – £100,000

Sun 2nd May 15:00 £150 Deepstack. £20,000 Guaranteed

Ok I’m entering this one and may get involved in some cash later dependent on my results… Thing is and as my blog ‘states’ i’m in for writing about sensory acuity so that will be the overall frame…

The last time I played I must admit I played well but it didn’t stop me from getting bored in periods of hand after hand of pure shite… Not that it matters what your holding… I’ll touch on that soon…

On the basis of that I will be including… when the state (boredom) or any other for that matter kicks in… and (i filter to recognise it)… what specifically did I do to bring me back to (THE FLOOOOOWWWWW BABY)… Now already as I mention ‘boredom’ that doesn’t mean to say I was not tuned into people or calibrating players… However, I can recall a hell of a lot of internal Dialogue that wasn’t serving me… You know, this is effing boring, I can’t get anything worth playing, I should make some moves etc…

We’ll see, but you can rest assured i’ll be giving outright honest feedback on just how much what I’ve learned I can take to the tables and bring back to YOU…

And in the form of a tidy profit towards the £100,000 I’m aiming for from a measly £100 pot..  Well £318 actually… And before the Pro’s start hollering “yeah it’s no way of bankrolling”…

Shuffle up and get them dealt…
